Opus Dei is a major Catholic organization that includes both priests and lay members (regular people who are not clergy). It is generally considered more conservative than many other Catholic institutions because it strongly advocates for traditional teachings, such as the use of Latin in Mass, and tends to uphold more conservative positions on social and moral issues. Compared to most other religious groups within the Church, Opus Dei has historically been granted an unusual degree of internal autonomy.
In 2022, Pope Francis proposed reforms for the leadership of Opus Dei. While Opus Dei's leader is currently a bishop elected internally, the proposed reforms would state that future leaders will no longer be bishops. Furthermore, under the proposed reforms, the organization would be placed under closer oversight from the Vatican's administrative offices and must provide regular reports to the Holy See.
